Building a secure fleet-management dashboard for connected ECG monitoring devices

Challenge

A team building a fleet of connected ECG monitoring devices needed a web dashboard that gave clinical and technical staff one place to watch device health, live ECG readings, and the security posture of every unit in the field - to verify the encrypted channel between each device and the platform was actually intact rather than just assumed, manage firmware rollouts across the fleet with a verifiable audit trail, and pull compliance-ready reports on demand instead of digging through raw logs.

Solution

We built a React and Tailwind dashboard organized around five views. A live system overview shows devices online/offline, verified-packet counts, active secure sessions, and a real-time ECG waveform with its live BPM readout. A device status panel tracks battery health and per-device security posture with one-tap report requests. A communication log timelines every encrypted packet exchanged with each device - the encrypted payload, the decrypted reading, and its cryptographic verification status - filterable per device and exportable to CSV. A security log timelines the actual key-exchange handshake each device goes through to establish its secure channel - public key received and validated, session and master keys generated, encrypted test data exchanged and verified - so an operator can see the cryptographic trust chain being built, not just a green checkmark. And an OTA and lifecycle view pushes signed firmware to specific devices, with every deployment logged by device, firmware version, timestamp, signature-verification result, and whether a rollback was triggered. A request-report flow lets a user bundle exactly the reports they need - security incidents, a compliance snapshot, device communication history, battery and resource usage - into a single request instead of assembling them by hand, and compliance status (HIPAA, ISO 27001) and encryption-standard labeling are surfaced directly on the overview so the fleet's security posture is visible at a glance, not buried in a settings page.

Results

The result is a single dashboard that gives a fleet operator visibility into exactly the things that matter for a connected medical device: whether data is actually encrypted end to end, whether every device's cryptographic handshake is healthy, whether firmware is rolling out safely with signature verification and rollback tracking, and whether the fleet is staying within its compliance posture - alongside the live clinical signal itself. Building the communication and security logs around the device's real handshake and packet-verification model, rather than a generic connected/disconnected status, gives operators an audit trail they can actually rely on when something needs to be proven, not just reported.
